Abstract
A cross sectional multidisciplinary study was carried out among chicken chasers to assess the work environment and to find possible differences between 2 working methods: the drawer and the lorry methods. The ergonomic part included heart rate recordings, observation techniques, interviews and subjective ratings at 20 chasers from the two methods. Work cycle time was 13.3s and 16.4s at the drawer and the lorry methods. Heart rate recordings showed values corresponding to a relative heart rate increase of 555 and 58% for the two methods during a whole working day both exceeding recommended acceptable limits of 30-355 of maximum heart rate increase. For the two methods 518 lifts were recorded with a mean burden of 16 kg and 12 kg, and all were identified as implying a risk of injury, because of awkward postures. As the lifting frequency was high the calculated total tonnage lifted per day was 19.4 ton and 14.8 ton. the work is recommende to be time limited and the workstation redesigned.
